Final Fantasy VI Advance: Bad Nostalgia Trip

Part of me wants to blame my dissatisfaction with this game on the fact that I played later Final Fantasy games (FFVII, FFX) before coming back and playing this one. But really, FFVI is weak-sauce no matter what you put it against.
For a game that contains the actual end of the world, the story is a bit underwhelming. Part of the problem may be that there are so many characters to choose from that, by the end of the game, it becomes so confusingly non-linear that it loses focus.
The plot is supposed to center around Terra, a mysterious girl with mysterious powers, but mysteriously, she isn't that interesting. Just as well, because at the halfway point you have to rebuild your party from scratch, but Terra's nowhere to be found. Instead, you're Celes, a general forced to turn against her own nation for the good of humanity. Much more interesting. Nice of them to bore me and jerk my chain for half a game.
I suppose every character gets their moment to shine, but only a few have any meat to their story. Most characters' stories include an Introduction, a Resolution and that's it. The whole plot is superficial and unfocused, and in a Final Fantasy game, what the fuck else is there?
At the risk of unfocused myself, a few other notes:
1. Splitting up 12 characters into 3 parties was never fun. It is forced upon you, though, to prevent you from playing as the same 4 characters for the whole game. I always love being forced to do things. Lame.
2. Mog was over-hyped, he wasn't that interesting (you remember the hype, right? Never mind). Also, he stumbled at least half the times I made him Dance.
3. The idea of special character abilities is cool, except when it's lame. Runic is useless. Bushido isn't worth charging up. The full-circle input for Blitz is impossible (this isn't SFII, dammit).
The combat and magic-development was fun, and the dragon dungeons were a nice touch, but this game was not what I expected, given all the praise. Disappointment!
